The Five W's

What?

Tandem Magazine in the only enthusiast magazine in the world, dedicated to all facets of tandem bicycles. Each issue contains tandem road tests, product reviews, travel/adventure stories, industry profiles, new products, a vintage tandem feature, letters, calendar and club lists, and, and, and. . . . . Tandem Magazine is a four color publication, printed quarterly, now at 80 pages, and distributed around the world.

Why?

My wife and I were looking to buy another tandem, but were frustrated with the lack of information available about the different manufacturers and products. Other bicycle publications all but ignored tandems. We had saved each issue from other publications that actually contained a tandem feature, so we knew the value of that information to the tandem community. But we felt that most other tandem coverage completely missed the mark by ignoring the tandem community and events. With the amount of information I had gathered, it was clear that I should somehow make it available to others. Now as a magazine, the information is always fresh. The magazine helps experienced tandem riders keep up with the community and products, and provides a look into the world of tandems for anyone who may be interested in making the investment for the first time. Now, if I had only known I would no longer experience a full nights sleep, would I have gone through with this anyway? Please don't ask. We're still having fun, and that's what's important.

When?

January 1, 1994 at about 8:00 PM, as I was reviewing the endless stack of product information I had gathered, a good friend of mine, who had worked in magazine publishing for years, said I should put this together and publish it somehow. By midnight, the basic framework for Tandem Magazine was laid out. We then gathered up some friends with varying levels of tandem, photography, and writing experience, cleaned up the barn, and took it too press. We are currently publishing quarterly, but have enough material to go beyond this. As soon as we can get this system running smoothly, we'll increase our frequency. Please remember, we all still have day jobs!

Where?

We publish out of Eugene, OR. Actually we are in Crow, but Crow doesn't have a post office, so our address says Eugene. Since my wife and I had the barn with the office space upstairs, we chose to setup shop in there. The only downside to this, is our office window has a wonderful view of some of the finest bicycling roads around. On Saturdays, when we're upstairs working on the mag., we get to see all of you ride by, enjoying life. Stop by anytime, but be sure to bring a piece of rotten fruit for Wilbur.
